KAUFMAN ADAPTIVE MACD Trading Guide

Last updated: June 17, 2026

The Kaufman Efficiency-Adaptive MACD (K-MACD) is a premium oscillator that dynamically adapts its calculations to current market conditions. It combines Kaufman's Efficiency Ratio (ER) with fast and slow adaptive EMAs and rolling maximum normalization to create a robust, non-flickering MACD suited for any asset class.

Key Features

  • Kaufman's Efficiency Ratio (ER): Continuously measures the trend-to-noise ratio of price.
  • Efficiency-Adaptive EMAs: Fast and slow EMA smoothing speeds adapt in real-time to ER. During market congestion/sideways chop (ER -> 0), the smoothing speeds slow down significantly, collapsing the MACD line to zero to prevent false crossovers.
  • Rolling Maximum Normalization: Scales the final output strictly within a stable [-100, 100] range over a configurable lookback window, preventing line flattening on extreme price swings.
  • Multi-State Color-Coded Histogram: Zero-centered histogram colored by cycle strength, trend, and efficiency.

What does the indicator show?

  • MACD Line (Sky Blue): The dynamic efficiency-adaptive MACD line.
  • Signal Line (Orange): Dashed signal line calculated as an EMA of the MACD line.
  • Histogram: Zero-centered histogram representing the difference between the MACD and Signal lines:
    • Bullish Strong (Bright Green): Positively expanding momentum above zero.
    • Bullish Weak (Dark Green): Positive but decaying momentum above zero.
    • Bearish Strong (Bright Red): Negatively expanding momentum below zero.
    • Bearish Weak (Dark Red): Negative but decaying momentum below zero.
    • Choppy/Flat (Grey): Active when Efficiency Ratio (ER) is low (< 30%), indicating high congestion/chop.

Trading Strategies

  • Adaptive Crossovers: Enter Long when the Blue MACD line crosses above the Orange Signal line, and enter Short when it crosses below, ignoring signals when the histogram turns Grey (choppy state).
  • Trend Re-Entry: During an established trend, look for transitions from weak histogram colors to strong colors (e.g. from Dark Green to Bright Green) to add to active positions.
